Melrose is a picturesque town in the Scottish Borders, where UFO is based. The town is home not just to the international sport of Rugby Sevens, but also a magnificent ruined abbey where the heart of King Robert the Bruce is said to be buried.
The town center underwent redevelopment, including a new traffic flow system and pedestrianization of some areas of the historic Market Square. A welcoming seating area was created in the middle of the square, including a raised terrace, steps and pretty flower beds.
The redevelopment was carried out by Scottish Borders Council, who contracted UFO to supply and install a fiber optic lighting system to illuminate the town square at night.
The steps to the terrace were lit with fiber-optic marker lines, both for decorative reasons and as a night-time safety measure. These were made from our stranded side glow fiber, set in resin in 1" U-section metal channels. These channels were manufactured specially for the project in our factory in Coldstream.
To supply white light to the whole terrace area, we used five of our Compact 150W metal halide illuminators. These were hidden in vented weatherproof enclosures built into the walls of the terraced area. The enclosures have lockable doors so that council workers can easily gain access and change the lamps when required.
