Museum & Gallery Display Lighting Projects

The Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum

Salisbury Museum is a treasure of British heritage which includes prehistoric artifacts from Stonehenge, and wonderful medieval collections. It's based in the King's House, a beautiful medieval half-timbered building, and includes some of the Britain's most important archaeological finds outside a national museum.

In 2012, the museum was awarded a grant to develop the Wessex Gallery, named after its patron, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. This new gallery showcases some of the most outstanding archaeological artifacts in the UK, including the grave of the Amesbury Archer, a Bronze Age man dating to around 2300BC, and a manuscript pointer from the times of Alfred the Great.

Lighting design for the new gallery's display cases was carried out by the London lighting design consultancy, Sutton Vane Associates. Due to the complexity of the exhibition, the cases were custom-built by the leading UK showcase manufacturers, Mayvaert. The historical significance and fragility of the exhibits on display meant it was vital to ensure the lighting didn't cause any damage. Sutton Vane Associates specified UFO's fiber optic products for this important project, as they're free from heat and ultraviolet rays, and specially designed to meet the most exacting standards in museum and conservation display lighting.

The Wessex Gallery's 30 large display cases are illuminated with a UFO made-to-order Light Bar system. Light bars with a diameter of 27mm (1.1") are fitted discreetly in the side of each case, to create as little distraction as possible for visitors. Each light was specified individually for each case, and designed with a flat front fitted with our mini trumpet extrusions. These can be adjusted to pick out significant features of the artifacts on display.

The light bars are powered by 30 of our Mercury LED illuminators. These are fitted in the bottom of each showcase for easy access. The Mercury was specified because of its high CRI>90, dimming and color temperature options, which make it ideally suited for illuminating exhibition display cases.
